Touch Me, by Lynn Crandall

Today I have the beautiful and talented Lynn Crandall to answer some questions about her newest release, Touch Me. I had the honor of getting to beta read Touch Me before its release, and I still can’t stop thinking about it and its characters! Payson and Braden were so likeable, their conflicts so real, and their emotions so visceral I felt I was experiencing their life through Lynn’s words. Touch Me is a gem, and isn’t that cover amazing!?!

Bounty hunter Payson Silver stands on the top of the tallest building in her city and sees
proof below in the cries for help, the theft underway, and fighting in progress that darkness is
growing. Locating skips, lost people, and objects is only one of her jobs. Born an Aeon, a direct
descendent of evolved people of Atlantis, Payson came into the world knowing her purpose in
life – to balance dark energies with light and prevent the world from going deeply into darkness,
starting with the City of Auralia. Alongside the love of her life, Braden Powers, and other fellow
Aeons, she uses her psychometric ability and special skills to defeat the mission of Dark Aspects,
or DAs as she calls them, from turning the city into darkness. Her greatest weapon against the
darkness is her ability to send the energy of light and love into the world. Her greatest obstacle to
saving the world is fellow Aeon turned DA, Diane Butler, and her own resistance to her mission.

Braden too battles a lack of commitment to the Aeons’ mission, and the reminder that he
lost control of his mind-control ability once with dire consequences. While he understands the
importance of his work, it is only head-deep, not within his heart.

As bounty hunter and police officer, Payson and Braden counter darkness by enforcing
justice and protecting residents from those who harm others and commit crimes. But when
Diane’s dark jealousy drives her to block Braden’s mind to his real life and create a new one for
him, Payson can’t stop her. To lose her love is devastating and she knows she has only ten days
to bring him back to the light.

Dark forces are powerful, and Payson and Braden battle to save each other and their
precious relationship, while the fate of the world lies in balance. The battle for good goes on
under the radar of humanity, but the outcome will mean the difference of a thriving planet or the
slow death of all that is. They face difficult choices to save their love, save their souls, and save
the world from succumbing to the Dark Side.

Lynn’s Interview:

Thank you Angela for having me on your beautiful blog!

Thank you for being here. Now let’s get started!

What intrigues you about your Touch Me?

The challenge. I knew I wanted to write a kind of epic look at life from the perspective of the importance of daily choices, while exploring what it would be like to have a great love, then lose it. I also determined to improve my writing skills in writing the book. So I wrote very deliberately and tried new methods.

That’s awesome. It’s always fun to do something new, and I truly believe it helps our creativity. When did you absolutely know that you had to be a writer?

I read an article in the newspaper years ago about a local romance author and it piqued my interest. I made a rather flippant decision to write. I knew I had to learn all about it and one of the first things I did was read John Gardner’s On Becoming a Novelist. Boom! It was uncanny how much the book resonated with me. It was like I had just discovered my reason for being. From that point on my passion for writing has never diminished. It sounds ridiculous, but above all else, I want to write.

I’ll have to see if I can find that book! What was your favorite part of writing Touch Me?

I enjoy the process of writing a story, so simply doing that was great. Dropping into characters to the degree that I’m looking at what they’re going through from a first person perspective was something I found remarkably satisfying.

Are you a plotter, a pantser, or both?

Pantser. Writing for me is a discovery over and over. But I do create a loose plan for how I want the story to unfold. To write Touch Me I used a storyboard of index cards and followed the plan from Save the Cat. My cards were vague, as any pantser’s would be. I know there are programs for doing the same thing, but I like hands on and visual. My board is in my writing space and I can sit and contemplate it without staring at my computer screen.

That sounds like an interesting technique. Do you have a certain theme in all of your novels?

It seems to me that I write themes of family in a wider context than simple biological connections. It just keeps showing up in my stories. And also the concept of being different and accepting it. A line from a book I’ve written references the idea of opening our minds to possibilities: The world is nothing like you believe it to be.

Do you have a specific writing style?

I do. It’s kind of wordy and I like to use nouns as verbs.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?

The message of Touch Me is we are in charge of creating our lives, whether we do it through conscious choice or not. Here are a couple lines that sum up the message: The difference between light and dark forces is choice. Choice can be seductive. Be careful what you choose.

Ooh, I love that! If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one book with you, what would you take?

Touch Me, lol!

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one song with you, what would you take?

Oh, wow! What an interesting question. I get earworms so easily, I can’t imagine playing one song over and over. I totally love music and write to playlists, so I’m always discovering new favorite songs. Just this week I learned about Jon Batiste and his version of It’s a Wonderful World. He purposely added what he called spaces that promote reflection. I could stand replaying his version of that song.

Are you working on any projects right now?

Arrgh! I am going through a contemporary romance doing revisions. I don’t hate revisions, and things are going smoothly and quickly, but I’m at the point I want to be done. The story is titled Love and Cherish, and is a runaway bride story. My romances quite often end with a wedding. In Love and Cherish the wedding is at the beginning. I have enjoyed writing about the themes of needing to escape and finding yourself by running away.

That sounds interesting! Besides writing, what would be your career of choice?

I love (hmm, I’m using the word love a lot.) with art history. If I had been a young person who really knew myself, I can imagine I would have majored in art history, then used my knowledge of to write fiction.

What are your hobbies away from your computer?

I wouldn’t call them hobbies, but I “need” to get into nature to stay balanced, so I walk or I walk with my husband at parks. I also ride my bike, read, spend time with family, and watch TV/movies. Pretty average stuff. Can a love for drinking coffee be considered a hobby?

Absolutely! Have you traveled to any locations that appear in your books?

Touch Me is set in a fictitious Michigan town on the shore of Lake Michigan, and in Chicago. I’m from Michigan and Lake Michigan is in my blood. The town, Dunes Bay, was inspired by South Haven, Michigan, where I spent many hours at the beach. And I love Chicago and have been there many times.

That’s very awesome. The setting of Touch Me was so real to me, and I love learning about new places (even when they are fictitious) through novels. Can you share a tip about what you do when you get stuck in your writing?

Typically, when I hit an empty spot in my head while writing, I do clustering. It’s a brainstorming method that has no limits, and I love it. Clustering bypasses my inner censor and gets my thoughts flowing. For instance, if I’m having trouble bringing a scene together or can’t find a beginning to the scene, I’ll cluster regarding the purpose of the scene. The practice of clustering helps me with everything.

I love that! I had forgotten about that but I am storing it in the back of my brain to use it next time I’m stuck. What’s your dream vacation destination?

Zihuatanejo, Mexico. I’m a beach and water person, so I would go there for ocean and beaches. My husband and I talk about escaping to that town when we want a break from everyday life, based on a line in a movie: They say the Pacific Ocean has no memory. That’s where I want to live the rest of my life. A warm place with no memory. It sounds like a peaceful place where our lives could just roll along, but we don’t really know that, yet.

What a great line. Are you a pet person? If so, do you have any?

I definitely love animals. All kinds. I have always had pets, but I think of them as members of my family. I presently have one cat named Willow. She is my daemon, to coin a word from The Golden Compass.

I love animals and they are definitely part of the family. I probably have a cat in almost all of my novels. Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?

I first started making up stories when I was a little girl. My younger sister and I shared a bedroom, and at night I would tell her stories. I don’t know why, but I imagine I was simply expressing my creativity.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?

With a reporter’s background, I tend to write in news style, which is not good in fiction.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Find a good therapist! LOL. Seriously, a good therapist can help find your true self. And look at writing as your path for personal development.

That’s great advice! If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?

I wish I had been the author of the Nadia Stafford series by Kelley Armstrong. I enjoy the raw depth of emotions Armstrong writes, and the characterization is beautiful.

Lynn Crandall Interview

lynn-crandall Today I have the joy of interviewing the very lovely Lynn Crandall. Lynn Crandall started spinning stories as a child when she tried to entertain her younger sister at night when they were supposed to be going to sleep. In the dark, her stories typically took on a scary or paranormal element — didn’t do much to put her and her sister to sleep. Today, she hopes here stories still fail to put readers to sleep, but rather take them on a journey. That’s what she’s been on since she decided to make writing her focus. As a reporter and magazine feature writer, she truly enjoys learning as she works on stories. As a romance writer, she enjoys following an evolving story of her characters. She loves to tell stories about characters who don’t back down and use their challenges to grow.

What intrigues you about Dancing with Detective Danger?
Call it biased, but I love all of my books for a variety of reasons. What intrigues me about Dancing with Detective Danger is the relationship between the sisters, Sterling and Lacey. I wanted to explore being in family in different ways. The sisters are unique but they still support each other and allow for differences without judgement. So when heroine Sterling faces the return of a former lover, Detective Ben Kirby, and all the confusion surrounding their relationship, her sister is understanding but gives her a straight shot of truth when Sterling is ready for it.

When did you absolutely know that you had to be a writer?
Many times. I first had that aha moment years ago when everything about writing and my personality came together. I began pursuing a writing career, but often I had to face self-doubt. I would reexamine being a writer from different angles and always land on a solid spot that confirmed it was right for me to write. Over and over, and finding different layers of self-doubt. Even just a few months ago, I faced it again at a deeper level. I realized anew and more profoundly that my passion always brings me to greater understanding of myself and the place writing holds for me. I don’t have any doubts now, so I absolutely know I have to be a writer to live my life. Things like disappointment with sales and reviews come up, but hope is more outspoken in me these days.

What was your favorite part of writing Dancing with Detective Danger?
I’m an introvert, so I enjoy finding the inner motivations and experiences of characters via my self-reflection and becoming the character. The experience of being lost in life is not unique, but with Sterling, I found it meaningful to take apart a foundational wounding and illustrate how it plays in her present choices. My version of that can only be written by me, but the experience is universal.

What is your favorite aspect of reading a novel?
I love immersing into a story, feeling the characters’ journey, and learning things about myself and life from the story. That total experience is mesmerizing.

Are you a plotter, a pantser, or both?
I am a pantser and I embrace that aspect of me. It can be challenging because I don’t necessarily know what happens next, but I enjoy the organic movement of the story’s development. I trust that process even with the nerve-wracking moments of What now??!! I interviewed an expert on the pantser vs. plotter and just learning to become a plotter a while ago and she settled that dilemma for me. She said pantsers can change but probably only because they were a plotter in the making. True pantsers have brains wired that way.

Do you have a certain theme in all of your novels?
I think themes in all my books are pretty common to all stories. I like to explore ways of humans being in family, feeling different, and how love can embrace more of life than characters expect. Dancing with Detective Danger showcases how patterns people have prevent them from living their true lives and finding love.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
I think a great take-away from DWDD would be that no matter how much pain sits beneath our daily experiences we have control over our lives by facing the various truths waiting to be revealed.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one book with you, what would you take?
This question made me gasp. One Book! My brain just froze.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one song with you, what would you take?
I love this question! One of my favorite songs right now is Melanie Doane’s Chopin Ballad https://youtu.be/8Ks02_Er9hA. It is so calming and reassuring.

Are you working on any projects right now?
I’m working on a romantic suspense with paranormal elements. I’m planning it as the first book in a three-book series. It’s taking longer to complete than any other books I’ve written because I’m being very deliberate and trying to stretch my skills. It’s done, but I’m going through it right now rewriting and editing. The main characters are what I call Aeons, who are direct descendants of Atlantians. They possess abilities that equip them to help prevent the world from going all to Hell.

Do you see writing as a career?
Writing is a business, and I know that. It is amazing work but it is hard, also. But because it is such a strong passion for me, I’m willing to recognize that it’s work and put in the work. Yes, it is a career. It can have duration if I can sustain a combination of skill, luck, determination, and successful promotions, as well as drink tons of coffee.

Besides writing, what would be your career of choice?
I enjoy learning about symbolism, especially in art, so I would be interested in art history. However, I can’t imagine choosing any career other than writing.

Can you share a tip about what you do when you get stuck in your writing?
Another great question. I do get stuck. It can prompt anxiety. But I’ve learned that is a passing phase of getting stuck, so I don’t stay there. The thing that gets me unstuck is writing. I use clusters. http://www.gabrielerico.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=77 to help me get my thoughts moving without censor. They have been really helpful for me over and over.

Are you a pet person? If so, do you have any?
I am a very strong animal lover and advocate. I presently have one cat. Willow is a member of family. I have a T-shirt that conveys my sentiments about pets very well: I’m sorry. I can’t. I have plans with my cat.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Oh my gosh. This question makes me want to have a sit-down with my younger self and reveal all of life’s secrets. LOL! I think I would tell young Lynn to believe in herself and not make others her inner authority. I could offer my/her gramma’s advice – Follow your heart. And I would assure her that everything will be okay.

Thanks for inviting me to your blog today, Angela.

Thanks for stopping by! I can’t wait to hear about The Cavanaugh House. What intrigues you most about this story?

What most intrigues me about The Cavanaugh House is how the idea for the book came to me. The first sentence scrolled through my head as I drove along a busy urban highway on a road trip with my husband Rich. Other sentences followed and I knew a book was being conceived. Along with the sentences came the clear image of a house which I knew would play a major role in the story and was based on a childhood memory. I felt panicky because I was driving and couldn’t write my ideas down. When Rich woke up, I told him about the story in great detail hoping between the two of us we could remember. But those details were etched in my brain and stayed with me until I could commit them to paper. The next day, I saw the exact house I had imagined sitting desolate and deserted by the highway. My husband took photos of it, and one of them became my book cover. Add to that the tale of a ghost in a haunted winery we visited, and voilà, The Cavanaugh House was born.

Wow, that’s awesome. And the fact you actually saw the house while on your trip makes it more so. What was your favorite part of writing The Cavanaugh House?

I’m a pantser, that is someone who writes by the seat of my pants. My favorite part of writing all of my books is when I am surprised by a turn of events that I didn’t see coming, or some synchronicity that occurs and I don’t realize it until the book is complete. For example, in my first book, Love’s Destiny, someone knocks on the front door. I didn’t know who it was until my protagonist, Emily, opened the door and discovered that with me. I love that kind of stuff! Another is a connection between two names in The Cavanaugh House. I can’t reveal the connection because it gives away the ending, but it was pretty cool when I realized it. I thought, how the heck did that happen?

That’s always a great feeling, and I love it when we as writers are surprised by our stories. Do you have a specific writing style?

Writing The Cavanaugh House was very different from writing my two historical romances. In my first two books, I kept the language and dialogue more formal as it would have been in the 18th century. I even searched my manuscript for apostrophes to eliminate any contraction like can’t or don’t. I wanted the language elevated to keep the atmosphere of formality. One editor caught a character saying, “Hello” and cut it because that word wasn’t used until the invention of the telephone. I had to use “Good morning” or “Good day.” It was a relief to set The Cavanaugh House in 1968 where I could use contractions, idioms, even slang if I wanted to. So my writing style for The Cavanaugh House was much more contemporary.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one book with you, what would you take?

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee Even though I taught that book for years, I’ve never tired of it.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one song with you, what would you take?

“Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey

Both great choices! Are you working on any projects right now?

I have two projects in the works right now. I’ve completed a rough draft of Buried Secrets, the sequel to The Cavanaugh House. I put it away for a while because I needed distance from it so I could come back and revise it with fresh eyes. I’ve also started the third book in my Passionate Patriots series, Love’s Courage. I love the plot line in this book, so it will be fun to research.

Do you see writing as a career?

Yes. I retired from teaching early so I could pursue writing full time. I work at my craft everyday, though as a hybrid author (both traditionally and self-published) I see marketing as a career as well LOL.

What advice would you give to your younger self?

Start writing earlier in life. Don’t wait until you have time—make time.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?

William Shakespeare. I love words, and many of the words and phrases we commonly use today were invented by Shakespeare. For example, arouse, blushing, undress (I see a pattern here) gnarled, varied, zany. Sometimes when I’m writing I want to make up words because I can’t find the exact word I need. In The Cavanaugh House, I thought I’d made up the word “scritch” for the sound Jesse hears when the ghost appears. I didn’t want to use “scratch” because it has too many connotations, so “scritch” was what I settled on—a softer sound, a haunting sound. But I discovered it’s been used before. Hey, Will, I gave it a try.

The Cavanaugh House excerpt:

This house held secrets. Secrets that wafted through rotting window sashes on the winter wind.  Secrets that spiders wove into webs anchored between the ceiling and walls. Secrets that scuttled on the feet of cockroaches across stained kitchen linoleum and scurried into its cracks. Secrets that peered from holes in the baseboard from glinting mouse eyes. This house held the secrets close to its bosom where they had slept for decades. No one had disturbed these secrets in all the years the house sat decaying from neglect. There was no reason to, and there was no desire.

The Cavanaugh House blurb:

When Jesse Graham unlocks the door to the deserted house she inherited from her Aunt Helen, she doesn’t realize she’s unlocking secrets that had lain dormant for years. Reeling from a broken engagement to acclaimed musician Robert Cronmiller, Jesse wants to leave the city where her name is linked to his in all the society pages. Her best friend Maggie, aka Sister Angelina, convinces her to take a job at a private girls’ school in the pastoral Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. Anticipating a quiet, revitalizing life in her aunt’s deserted house, Jesse is instead thrown into a maze of danger. Questions about her aunt’s death lead Jesse to investigate events surrounding it and the people involved, but she uncovers a web of deceit that reaches far beyond the occurrences of over two decades earlier. Still dejected from her broken engagement, Jesse finds it difficult to trust anyone, even her self-absorbed mother. Joe Riley is irresistible, but secrets obstruct involvement with him until Jesse can solve the secrets of the Cavanaugh House. Someone doesn’t want those secrets unearthed and will stop at nothing, even murder, to keep them hidden.

Thank you very much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to take part in this interview.

P12-8a436

Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Candace Nicole Werts. I am an author with a passion for writing Erotica Romance for the entertainment of the adult community. Becoming an author has always been a dream of mine and it became reality with the creation of The Made Series.

Due to the lack of books that feature interracial couples, it was exciting to write a series featuring multicultural characters. These stories contain fashion, friendship, love, and the finest things that life can offer. The Made Series focuses on three best friends and the trials they face once love enters their lives.
My first book, Made to Love, features the enchanting Carmen and dashing Cooper. The book will be released on April 26, 2014 and available on Amazon.

What intrigues you about your book?
Made to Love is such a powerful statement. Love is everything and everywhere. It’s something most people, if not all, want in life. When I hear “Made to Love” I think it gives the impression that we were created to LOVE.

Who are your main characters in the story and how would you describe them?
In Made to Love, the main characters are Carmen Williams and Cooper Jackson. Carmen is a successful business owner who is young and beautiful. Carmen lives in Arlington, VA. Her life should be perfect, but every day she faces guilt due to the murder of her younger sister. This tragic event has controlled her love life.
Cooper Jackson is every woman’s fantasy, tall, dark and handsome. An event from his childhood, which he never discusses, has prevented him from wanting to love anyone, until he meets Carmen Williams. Even though his heart says yes he still pushes her away.

Who or what is your greatest writing influence?
I take my hat off to anyone, who has or is in the process of writing a book. It is exciting to read others work and enter the world they have created.

When did you absolutely know that you had to be a writer?
After I kept having dreams about characters, I knew I would become a writer.

What was your favorite part of writing Made to Love?
My favorite part of writing Made to Love was getting to know the characters personalities, their likes and dislikes and all of their secrets.

What is your favorite aspect of reading a novel?
I enjoy being able to fall in love with the characters. They become my friends and I become a part of their journey, experiencing life and various emotions with them.

What is your favorite aspect of writing a novel? I.e. do you prefer to create characters or to plot?
I dream the scenes; build a detailed bio on every character and then create the description of their surroundings. There is no particular sequence I use while writing. I can start creating a book from the middle or ending scenes and then write around it. There are several dreams that take place and help bring the scenes together. With so many ideas popping into my head, I am never without a notebook and pen. Multiple images, my imagination and some real life experiences help build the story and the characters.

Do you have a certain theme in all of your novels?
Currently, I write provocative romance stories. With The Made Series, the theme is based on friendship, relationship, dealing with the past and love. However, you never know what the future holds; I may crossover to the world of vampires and witches.

Do you have a specific writing style?
My writing style would be considered descriptive. I want the readers to feel like they are in the story and can clearly visualize what is taking place and their surroundings.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
No matter what has happened in your past, don’t let it hold you back; everyone deserves to find love and to be happy.

Do you ever use your life experiences in your novels?
The characters are fictional, but parts of them are a reflection of me and what has occurred in my life. Carmen’s parents interactions are based on my parents and the love they have for one another.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one book with you, what would you take?
This is a hard question, because I would become insane if I could only choose one book, but my decision would be Made to Love. I can never get enough of Carmen Williams and Cooper Jackson.

If you were stranded on a deserted island and could only take one song with you, what would you take?
“All of Me”, by John Legend, what can I say I love, love.

Are you working on any projects right now?
‘Made to Love’ is a part of The Made Series, which consists of three books. I decided to create The Made Series, because while reading books you love the main characters but you always want to know what happens to their friends. You have developed a special bond with them and in my series the readers will get to be a part of each girl’s life.

I have completed the second book and currently working on book three. After The Made Series is complete, I have a few ideas for other books.

Do you see writing as a career?
Yes, this is a career that brings me so much joy. It is fun using my imaginations on a daily basis.
If you had the career of your choice, what would you choose and why?
Being an author, would be my career choice. Creating characters and storylines are exciting and knowing that people will enjoy your work is the best feeling of them all.

Who would play your characters if your book was made into a movie?
Having a movie deal would be a dream come true. There is so much talent in the world, I prefer not to share who I would like to have portray my characters. But I will say that they do not have to be well known actors.

Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
The only difficult part I have experienced is waiting for the editor to get back to me. I am so excited to share Carmen and Cooper’s story and waiting can drive you crazy.

What advice would you give to your younger self?
Don’t stop believing, dreams do come true.

Which famous person, living or dead would you like to meet and why?
I would love to meet Tyler Perry. He is an amazing man who is the definition of never giving up on your dreams. He had hit rock bottom, but he stayed true to himself and never allowed anyone to stop him from achieving greatness. It proves with hard work and determination, you can accomplish anything you set out to do. Even with his fame, he continues to help people every day achieve their dreams.

If you could have been the original author of any book, what would it have been and why?
I am so pleased with The Made Series; I cannot imagine writing someone else’s work.
